Our “H” litter puppies left to their new homes

March 2nd, 2009

Now the kids are grown up and left their nest. We miss all the joy that they bring us, but at the same time we are happy and condratulate their new families, our new friends. Now we will have more time to train and spoil older dogs at our kennel.

Having Fun with your German Shepherd

November 7th, 2008

Who wants to have some fun?! A tired dog is a happy dog, and a tired German Shepherd is twice as happy. The degree of tongue protrusion in the picture is a clear evidence of who was working hard and who was just along for the ride.

German Shepherd puppies 1 day old, and their mom’s diet.

October 31st, 2008

We weighed the puppies today – all are uniform, weighing in at about 1 lb - very good weight for newborn German Shepherd puppies, especially from a large litter like this.

Quana is very happy with her pups and doesn’t want to leave them even for a minute. I gave her 16 oz cottage cheese for breakfast, mixed with 2 egg yolks and 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt.

And for dinner – 4 cups Orijen + 1 can of Green Tripe by Solid Gold + 2/3 lbs raw liver (cut into pieces).

New German Shepherd Puppies at Kennels von Lotta!

October 30th, 2008

This is a very special day – our V Quana vom Klausener Grund, SchH1, Kkl1, a1/a1 had 10 healthy German Shepherd puppies today! 3 boys and 7 girls. The proud dad is V2 (NASS) Yash von der Bastillie, SchH3, Kkl1, a1/a1.

The mom is resting with the babies under my constant supervision in our office. Please come back often to watch these new German Shepherd puppies developing.

Since my hands are pretty tied up with the little ones, our dogs will have to move from a completely raw/homemade diet to some frequent kibble meals. Chad is going to the store today to pick up 5 cases of Organ Mix and Raw Green Tripe, but also will get a few bags of Orijen. I believe this is the best dry dog food on the market today.

Puppies:
Morning:
Puppies did not have any breakfast today because raw liver did upset their stomach last light. They have diarrhea, which is not dangerous and will be back to normal tonight. But it’s best to skip a meal in such case.
Evening:
Each puppy had: 4 oz cottage cheese + 4 oz of plain yogurt + 1 tablespoon of Olewo + 1 tablespoon of Gelatine.

Such plain and small dinner is very helpful with their stomach trouble. Everyone had normal stool tonight.

Why would my German Shepherd puppy need Gelatine? I feel that the puppies need some help with their ears, and I heard that this particular supplement is helpful, but I’ve never tried it. It is called “NutraJoint Gelatine” by Knox. I also give “NutraJoint Gelatine plus Glucosamine” one of every three times.

Roasted Liver, Potatoes and Vegetables Soup. How did I prepare it today? The following is a homemade dog food recipe:

For 4 adults and 3 puppies:
In a large pan, combine 3 tablespoons of olive oil and 2.5 lbs of chopped beef liver. Roast for 15 minutes on med/high, stirring occasionally, so it’s brown on all sides. Add 1 cup chopped onion (1/2 large onion) and roast for 5 more minutes. The result should like similar to this:

Cut into small pieces 5 lbs Organic Yukon Gold potatoes:

Add 2 lbs of frozen vegetables. I used “Italian Blend” this time: cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, sweet red pepper, and zucchini. Make sure that the quality is checked against strict standards, and approved by a professional after every step:

Add liver into the pot with potatoes and vegetable, add 18 cups of water, and cook on medium for 20 minutes. Then add 6 oz Organic tomato paste and 1 tablespoon of Herbs de Provence or other herbs you have handy. Cook for additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. The final result should look similar to this:

Homemade Dog Food Recipe

Why do I like to prepare my homemade dog food with liver? Liver has irresistible smell/taste for my dogs when roasted, which allows me to mix all kinds of less popular things with it, like herbs, fruit, vegetables, supplements, etc. Ground beef, chopped beef heart, or stew beef may be used very successfully instead of liver, as a base for the “kasha”.

Raw Liver and your German Shepherd Dog

October 14th, 2008

Adults:
Nemka: 1 lb liver
Fanta: 1.3 lb liver
Quana: 1.3 lb liver
Yash: 1.8 lb liver
Liver is from naturally raised beef, raw, previously frozen ($0.99/lb)

Puppies:
Morning:
Each puppy had: 1 chicken back and 0.7 lbs of tripe
Evening:
Each puppy had: 1.3 lbs of raw liver

Why would my German Shepherd need raw liver? Liver is a very good source of vitamin A, iron, zinc, copper and manganese, protein, vitamin D, vitamin C, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, phosphorus and selenium. Some dogs do not like raw liver all that much. In such case I brown it a little with a pinch of salt and some olive oil. This is also useful if your dog develops soft stool because of raw liver. I feel that this is such an important part of dogs’ diet that I experiment with it to make sure that every dog will ear at least a little. When I feed my dogs kibble, I try to remember to add a couple of tablespoons of raw liver to their meals – this is just such a great natural supplement.

Tripe

October 13th, 2008

Don’t worry about your dog’s raw diet being repetitive at times. You really don’t have to provide daily variety, and the dogs enjoy their chicken a lot.

About Eggs

October 11th, 2008

Adults:
Nemka: 2 chicken backs
Fanta: 3 chicken backs
Quana: 4 chicken backs
Yash: 5 chicken backs
Chicken backs are fresh, raw, Bell & Evans, with skin on.

Puppies:
Morning:
The three puppies shared from one dish: 16 oz of cottage cheese + 20 oz of plain yogurt + 3 raw egg yolks + 3 egg whites, scrambled with 1 tablespoon of organic butter + 3 table spoons of Olewo + 3 teaspoons of Organic Kelp.
Evening:
Each puppy had: 1 sardine and 1 chicken back

Question about raw dog food: Why would my German Shepherd need egg yolk raw, but egg whites cooked? Egg yolk is packed with vitamins and should be given only 2 – 3 times a week. It is a good source of protein, fat, folate, vitamins A, B12, D, E, Phosphorus, and a very good source of Selenium. Just like with most foods, it is best to give it raw, so that these vitamins and minerals are in balance. Heat destroys enzymes and reduces the amount of certain nutrients. Those people who eat raw egg yolks report easier digestion, increased stamina, and resistance to illness, and hopefully our dogs enjoy the same benefits.
Egg white on the other hand, being an excellent source of Magnesium and other minerals, should NOT be fed raw. Egg whites contain anti-nutrients. Avidin is a glycoprotein in egg whites that binds to the B vitamin biotin, and can lead to a deficiency of this vitamin. Additionally, egg whites contain trypsin inhibitors, which could possibly inhibit proper digestion of protein, and growth. Heat destroys both of these compounds.
Note on eggs: eggs from chickens that are free to forage for grass and insects, are of much higher nutritional quality than eggs from confinement chickens. Insects provide a higher DHA content, and grass provides a higher vitamin E and carotene content, all found exclusively in the yolk. Egg yolks from pastured chickens are thus a powerful supplement to a healthy diet - a super-food.

Dog Food Recipe: Roasted Liver and Oats Kasha

October 2nd, 2008

Adults:
Nemka:1 scoop of kasha + 2 tablespoons of fresh finely chopped parsley + 1 tablespoon of Olewo + 3 tablespoons of organic tomato juice. She also ate a banana today. No cod liver oil because she ate sardines yesterday.
Fanta:2 scoops of kasha + 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil + 2 tablespoons of fresh finely chopped parsley + 1 tablespoon of Olewo + 3 tablespoons of organic tomato juice + 1/6 large banana.
Quana:3 scoops of kasha + 2 tablespoons of fresh finely chopped parsley + 1 tablespoon of Olewo + 3 tablespoons of organic tomato juice + 1/6 large banana. No cod liver oil because she ate sardines yesterday.
Yash:4 scoops of kasha + 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil + 2 tablespoons of fresh finely chopped parsley + 1 tablespoon of Olewo + 3 tablespoons of organic tomato juice + 1/6 large banana. Yash is picky, so I had to add skins from 3 chicken necks (cut into pieces and roasted on high until golden brown and crisp) with some salt, all fat included, to his kasha.

Puppies:
“G” litter puppies are 4.5 months old and eat twice a day.
Morning:
3 chicken necks per puppy. Chicken necks are fresh, raw, Bell & Evans, with skin on
Evening:
Per puppy: 1.5 scoops of kasha + 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil + 2 tablespoons of fresh finely chopped parsley + 1 tablespoon of Olewo + 3 tablespoons of tomato juice + 1/6 large banana.

Questions of the day:
Why would my German Shepherd Dog need carrots?Carrots contain a high concentration of beta-carotene (source of vitamin A, a powerful antioxidant), and are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and manganese, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, iron, potassium and copper. Feeding carrots regularly may also naturally enhance the red color in your German Shepherd’s coat. Olewo Carrots are a 100% natural product made from fresh carrots rich in carotene. 100 grams (3.5 oz.) of Olewo contain 50 mg. of carotene. One tablespoon of Olewo can be substituted for 1/2 of a cup of fresh ground carrots.

Why would my German Shepherd Dog need bananas? Bananas have lots of potassium and also magnesium. Great fruit for a human or K-9 athlete. Also a very good source of vitamin B6.

Why would my German Shepherd Dog need tomato juice? The more tomatoes dogs eat, the lower their risks of many different kinds of cancer. Eating processed (juice, puree, etc) tomatoes with small amount of fat added is the most beneficial. The tomato is also an excellent source of vitamin C, A, and potassium.

Today we have Roasted Liver and Oats Kasha. Homemade dog food recipe follows:

For 4 adults and 3 puppies:
In a large pan, combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 lbs of chicken liver. Roast for 15 minutes on med/high, stirring occasionally, so it’s brown on all sides. Add 1 cup of dried chopped chives, roast for 5 more minutes. If the juice is completely evaporated, add a little bit of water to prevent burning.

In a large pot, combine 1 lb of organic rolled oats, 4 quarts of water, and roasted liver. Use some of the water to rinse the pan where the liver was, so no flavor goes to waste. Bring to boil and boil on medium for 5 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon of sea salt and 2 tablespoons of dry oregano, boil for 3 more minutes. Let it cool completely.

Feeding German Shepherds raw sardines

Feeding German Shepherds raw sardines

We feed our adult German Shepherds once a day, and puppies are eating twice a day. Here is what I fed my dogs today:

Quana: 5 sardines (1.2 lbs).
Yash: 12 chicken necks. Yash doesn’t like sardines either.

Sardines are previously frozen, raw, whole (with head and all), from Oregon. ($0.69/lb when I buy a 22 lbs box ).

Puppies:
Our “G” litter puppies are 4.5 months old and eat twice a day.
Morning:
4 chicken necks per puppy. Chicken necks are fresh, raw, Bell & Evans, with skin on ($0.55/lb when I buy 40 lbs box).
Evening:

Garmonia: 1.5 sardines + 2 chicken necks + 2/3 lbs of “Natural mix”

Questions of the day: Why would my German Shepherd need sardines? Sardines are one of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Sardines are also rich in calcium, protein, iron, potassium, and phosphorus. Oil content is highest in summer.

Why would my German Shepherd need chicken necks with skin on? Chicken necks are an excellent natural source of calcium and phosphorus, and the skin has a very high fat content that your German Shepherd needs for energy and healthy coat.
